Velmer Meyer

V elmer D. Meyer, 98, of Sabetha, Kansas died Wednesday, January 20, 2016 at the Apostolic Christian Home in Sabetha.

V elmer was born on November 24, 1917 in Sabetha to Louis and Sara (Hartter) Meyer. He is the fourth of eleven children. He married Vila Strahm on April 27, 1941.

Velmer was a life-long farmer in the area, and loved working the ground. He operated a dairy farm for many years, as well as raised sheep. In 1988, Velmer and Vila retired and moved to Sabetha. Family was always a priority for Velmer. He spent much of his time with his children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren. He also loved to fish, fix things in his workshop, play his harmonica, and travel. He was able to take trips to the Bahamas, Canada, and Ethiopia during his lifetime. He was a member of the Apostolic Christian Church.

Preceding him in death were his parents, and his wife, Vila in January of 2006. He is survived by five children; Delwin (Rita) Meyer of Sabetha, Elaine (John) Garber of Sabetha, Daryl Meyer of Ft. Worth, Texas, Elizabeth McGuire of St. Charles, Missouri, and Brent Meyer of Sabetha; a brother, Ezra Glen, and fifteen grandchildren, and thirty-two great-grandchildren.

Funeral service will be Saturday, January 23, 2016 at 10:30 a.m. at the Apostolic Christian Church in Sabetha, Kansas. Visitation will be from 9:00 a.m. until service time at the Apostolic Christian Church. Interment will be made in the Sabetha Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to the Apostolic Christian Home or the Sabetha Community Hospital, sent in care of Popkess Mortuary, 823 Virginia, Sabetha, Kansas 66534.
